Tassili N'Ajjer national park in Algeria is very famous for its prehistoric rock paintings which are about 8000 years old. This whole site is located in the Tassili N'Ajjer mountain range located in southeast Algeria. The closest town is Djanet, which is about 10 km southwest of the range. This site is a UNESCO world heritage site. The prehistoric rock paintings and other ancient archaeological sites which date from neolithic times indicate that the local climate was much moister, with savannah rather than desert.

These paintings were probably here during the last ice age. More than 15,000 drawings and engravings record the climatic changes, this site has one of the most important groupings of prehistoric cave art in the world. The geological formations in Tassili N'Ajjer are of outstanding scenic interest, with eroded sandstones forming 'forests of rock', about 300 natural rock arches have been formed in this region. Because sandstone can hold water and its altitude there is more vegetation than what you normally find in the desert.

There are flights which reach Danjet from Illizi, often in smaller planes. Its recommended to take a guide to visit the landmarks of Tassili N'Ajjer, Algeria. The plateau of Tassili of N'Ajjer rises to approximately 500 meters above the plain of Djanet, and there is no access to the top with vehicles. Two very steep passes can only be tackled on foot and by pack donkeys. The best time to travel to Tassili N'Ajjer is mid-autumn, or mid-spring. All of the travel agencies in Djanet survive by organizing treks to the plateau, so once there it is possible to arrange for a tour starting the next day, complete with guide plus pack animals and their herders to carry the luggage, food and water.
